Orienteering at Iron Hill Park |
| Date: Sep 18, 2022 at 9:30am to 2:30pm | |
Orienteering is a competitive sport in which participants find their way to various checkpoints across rough country with the aid of a map and compass, the winner being the one with the lowest elapsed time.
Courses range in difficulty from easy and short to long and technical, and the higher the difficulty, the more off-trail the checkpoints are which requires you to use your map, compass, and the landmarks around you to "orient" yourself in the direction of the checkpoint.
Difficulty levels are color coded from easiest to hardest: White, Yellow, Orange, Brown, Green, Red, Blue. We will be sticking with just White (Beginner), Yellow (Advanced Beginner), and Orange (Intermediate) so please do not sign up for anything harder.
Iron Hill Park is small with little variety in terrain, making it a great event for beginners. The White course is 1.1 miles with 8 checkpoints, the Yellow course is 1.6 miles with 10 checkpoints, and the Orange course is 2.6 miles with 15 checkpoints.
IMPORTANT: The distances listed above are as the crow flies between checkpoints; the actual distance you will travel will be more if you take trails (which I recommend). Keep this in mind when choosing your course.
The event begins at 9:30am, with the last start times happening around 1:00pm. The event ends at 2:30pm.
Register for the event here: https://eventreg.orienteeringusa.org/eventregister/a40/register/start/dvoa-iron-hill---sep-18-2022
Sign ups close at 9:00am on Friday September 16th.
The event costs $12 to register; if you want to compete as a team, only one person has to sign up and you can split the price. You are provided with one map but can buy extra maps for your teammates for $2 each which I recommend. Where it says E-Punch Rental, select Yes. This is a device that you strap to your finger and “punch” into the checkpoints when you find them.
Be on the lookout for an orienteering training meeting some day before the event where you can learn more about this growing and exciting sport! Hope to see you there! | |
