Orienteering at White Clay Creek

Date: Nov 20, 2022 at 10:00am to 2:30pm
Orienteering is a competitive sport in which participants find their way to various checkpoints across rough country with the aid of a map and compass, the winner being the one with the lowest elapsed time. Courses range in difficulty from easy and short to long and technical, and the higher the difficulty, the more off-trail the checkpoints are which requires you to use your map, compass, and the landmarks around you to "orient" yourself in the direction of the checkpoint. Difficulty levels are color coded from easiest to hardest: White, Yellow, Orange, Brown, Green, Red, Blue. We will be sticking with just White (Beginner), Yellow (Advanced Beginner), and Orange (Intermediate) so please do not sign up for anything harder. For first time orienteers, I recommend the Yellow course. The White course is entirely on trail and very short, so it may be too easy. Yellow is a bit longer and has some off trail portions. Orange is long and has lots of off trail portions and will be extremely difficult for first time orienteers so I do not recommend it. Register for the event here: [registration not yet open] The event costs money to register [Iron Hill was $12 but not sure if this will be more or the same yet]; if you want to compete as a team, only one person has to sign up and you can split the price. You are provided with one map but can buy extra maps for your teammates for $2 each which I recommend. Where it says E-Punch Rental, select Yes. This is a device that you strap to your finger and “punch” into the checkpoints when you find them. Be on the lookout for an orienteering training meeting some day before the event where you can learn more about this growing and exciting sport! Hope to see you there!
