This is a continuing education session open to all who have attended a past Social Justice Education program. This workshop will be an overview of disability issues in the United States. Although 1 in 5 people are disabled, disability issues are too often overlooked or rendered completely invisible. We will have a brief history of milestones in the fight for disability rights and an understanding of the social vs. medical models of disability and then concentrate the bulk of our time addressing systemic ableism and able-bodied privilege. The goal of the workshop is to help attendees see disability as a social justice issue and to think about disability and its treatment under oppresive systems. We will end with a brainstorming session about being an ally to the disabled community and the importance of gaining an understanding of the framework formed in 2005 known as “disability justice.” For more information please email Allyson.Ryder@unh.edu ** You have 48 hours prior to this event to remove your name from the list.
