Event Description: This address highlights Centre College successes in undergraduate research to show how such experiences advanced both the faculty mentors’ and students’ goals and built a foundation for subsequent achievements. In that context, this talk also offers practical advice to Centre students at all levels for getting started in research in various fields of study, making the most of vitally important relationships with faculty mentors, communicating the results of their research in compelling ways, and translating those experiences for competitive postgraduate opportunities. It likewise imparts to faculty and administrators the theory and practice of designing effective research courses and co-curricular opportunities. The goal is not just to promote undergraduate research as a means of launching into career success, though that is a measurable and powerful effect of such programs. This address also demonstrates how students attain lifelong, beneficial skills and dispositions and are much more likely to persist and complete a degree if they participate in mentored research. For all those reasons, this presentation advocates equitable access to undergraduate research across Centre College’s departments and programs.
