"The Centre College Office of Diversity & Inclusion excitedly invites you to our First Annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service!
On Saturday, January 19, 2019, we will gather to commemorate the lives and work that Dr. King and his contemporaries dedicated their lives to, not only civil rights but also education, homelessness, and hunger. Our desire, as has been the desire of Congress and Coretta Scott King since 1994, is for this day to bring together people who might not ordinarily work together to perform extraordinary acts of service.
Participants will begin by gathering for a light breakfast at 8 AM to meet their site leaders, grab refreshments, get inspired by our fearless leader Ashley Oliver (Director of Diversity and Inclusion Programming), and head out to their sites. Our service sites have been carefully chosen for their depth of service and impact in the Danville/Boyle County community. They are as follows:
First Site: "Soup's on Us" is a weekend food ministry sponsored by Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, The Presbyterian Church of Danville, First Christian Church, and Lexington Avenue Baptist Church. The churches are responsible for providing meals for 300 plus hungry Danville residents on each Saturday of every month, including making boxes, preparing meals, packing boxes, and delivering meals.
Second Site: Hope Network, Shepherd's House and ASAP (Agency for Substance Abuse Policy) are partnering to build "Blessing Boxes" or "Little Free Pantries" to place around town. These are essentially public cabinets for people to donate food and other goods and also take whatever they need. We will be following in the footsteps of a local young man who built blessing boxes for his eagle scout project and building three-four more boxes to stock with food around town. This project will be conducted at Shepherd's House.
Third Site: The Blue Bird Market is a non-profit organization whose profits support therapies and pre-school education for children from birth to the age of five at the Wilderness Trace Child Development Center. Every Saturday, Blue Bird opens its doors from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to sell its many second-hand treasures. Participants at the service site can expect to assist by setting-up and organizing the items in the market, cleaning and dusting the store, refreshing the paint in some areas, and pricing each new item.
Our day of service is open to all members of our Centre community - students, staff, and faculty. There is limited space at each of these sites, so please sign up ASAP!
Each site will have a site leader that will lead folx through the service as well as lead a debrief of the labor everyone contributed to the site and issue. After service is complete, around noon, everyone will gather again to break bread over a lunch catered by a local company.
Please sign up at the link below and feel free to contact Ashley Oliver (Ashley.Oliver@centre.edu) for any clarifying questions. We can't wait to serve alongside you on Saturday the 19th"! | |
