The Theatre of the Oppressed is based on the concept of dialogue and interaction between audience and performer. After a two-day planning workshop spent developing plays based on themes relevant to campus life with 30 campus members, Reg Flowers will facilitate the presentation of these plays to the community. Audience members may stop a performance, usually a scene in which a character is being oppressed (i.e., a typically chauvinist man mistreating a woman). The audience is invited "to the stage" to attempt to break the oppression via playing out an action, to be empowered and empower others through the experience. This brings audience members into the performance, to have input into the dramatic action they are watching. The result should be something like group "brainstorming" about social problems within the community. Reg Flowers is an artist, activist, and educator. Reg has been a Theater of the Oppressed practitioner since 2009. | |
