Theater of the Oppressed

Date: Nov 16, 2016 at 8:00pm to 9:00pm
According to Russell, Theater of the Oppressed "was developed by Augusto Boal, a stage producer who was exiled from Brazil for speaking out against the military regime, in the 1970s in Latin America as a way to use theater in order to find better ways to deal with oppression and mistreatment. Theatre of the Oppressed has since been replicated in the UK, in India, in New York, and more. The basic structure is that the actors will act out a scene in which the main character of the story is oppressed or mistreated in some way, then the audience themselves will get the opportunity to replace the main character to find a solution. You can talk to me or Allyson sometime if you want to know more about it. For the leadership event, we would not be doing anything intense, but more casual. The point is to work through situations that are relatable to us that we could encounter or have encountered in our own lives, as well as being empathetic to people in worse situations than our own. It will involve some hands on participation as well as a little discussion (because there are no right or wrong answers)." Also, COOKIES AND MILK if 7 people sign-up!
