Convo: What Good Am I? & How to Make a Difference |
| Date: Apr 16, 2015 at 7:30pm to 9:30pm | |
Convocation Description:
German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a founder of the "Confessing Church" that refused to cooperate with the Nazis. Imprisoned in a concentration camp after implication in the plot to kill Hitler, he was executed in April 1945. This convocation looks at Bonhoeffer's seminary years in New York and the influence of African American Christianity on his spirituality. Murray State University Professor of History Duane Bolin takes us on Bonhoeffer's journey through the American south of the 1930s. Bonhoeffer's encounter with racial segregation, degradation of African Americans, and lynching, changed his life. The presentation includes images from Germany and the American south, and music from gospel choirs and Bob Dylan, to show how a German Christian's encounter with "the American problem" convinced him to resist Hitler's response to "the Jewish question." Our speaker examines the active discipleship of Bonhoeffer to ask, "How can we make a difference in our world today?" | |
