Join us to collectively read and discuss the graphic novel adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s novel Parable of the Sower by Damian Duffy and John Jennings. We will spend 40 minutes reading quietly together in a relaxed, laid-back setting with snacks! We will spend the last 20 minutes discussing the text.
Parable of the Sower is set in a post-apocalyptic Earth heavily affected by climate change and social inequality. The novel follows Lauren, who navigates a dystopian future, developing a new philosophy called Earthseed and leading survivors to build a better future.
Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler has been banned in some schools and prisons because it discusses racism, classism, and climate change. The book is a commentary on what American society could become if it doesn’t change.
Everyone will leave with a copy of the book! Please register on UIC Connect. We will also be emailing you to confirm your attendance a few days before the event, and we will need you to reply to ensure we have a copy of the book for you!
