Teaching a Dark Chapter: History Books and the Holocaust in Italy and the Germanys |
| Date: Jan 29, 2026 at 5:30pm to 6:45pm | |
Dr. Daniela R. P. Weiner will discuss her book, Teaching a Dark Chapter: History Books and the Holocaust in Italy and the Germanys, which was recently published by Cornell University Press. In Teaching a Dark Chapter, Dr. Weiner examines how the post-fascist countries of Italy, East Germany and West Germany taught about fascism and the Holocaust in their schools, looking particularly at these events’ depictions in school history textbooks. Teaching a Dark Chapter challenges traditional narratives about the development of European Holocaust memory and demonstrates that long before the 1968 student revolts, education played a significant role in influencing public memory about Nazi/Fascist atrocities.
