Fighting for Family
Fighting for Family tells one family’s story from refugee flight to school-to-prison-to-deportation pipeline while highlighting the power of community resistance.
Directed by Lan Nguyen | 2020 | 30 mins
North Carolina is home to the largest Montagnard community outside of Southeast Asia. Montagnard, a French term meaning “mountain dweller”, refers to many different peoples in and from the Central Highlands of Vietnam and eastern Cambodia. As a result of Montagnard support of US troops during the Second Indochina War, thousands of Montagnards have resettled in North Carolina. They first arrived as refugees in 1986, nearly 40 years ago. These films tell the story of how Montagnards came to be in NC, how they have supported one another over the years, and how they continue to face the devastating effects of federal deportation policy.
The screenings will be followed by a panel discussion comprising community members and experts.
