Jack Johnson became the first Black heavyweight champion in 1910 at the height of Jim Crow laws. In the wake of his victory in the "fight of the century," riots broke out across the country. PlayMakers Repertory Company's current production of The Royale is inspired by this true story.
This conversation is hosted by UNC Professor of History Dr. Matthew Andrews. His research explores the links between sports, politics, and political protest in American History.
After the conversation, stay to watch the show, 90 minutes long beginning at 7:30pm. The conversation and the performance are each eligible for CLE credit separately. | |
