Alcatraz Gardens Clean Up

Date: Apr 28, 2015 at 8:00am to 12:00pm
Environment/Gardening/Restoration. The extraordinary gardens of Alcatraz reflect a rich history of horticulture and gardening ideas spanning many different eras, including floriferous Victorian cottage gardens, terraced cutting beds, and environmentally sensitive attempts at erosion control. Since 2003, garden volunteer crews have been working each week to re-establish the historic gardens. Volunteer activities include weeding, pruning, and planting. Through the project, volunteers will be introduced to the stories of the gardens and have the opportunity to visit some areas not accessible to the public. As an added bonus, garden volunteers arrive on Alcatraz before other visitors, so you can experience the island during the most tranquil time of day. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty rain or shine. Bring bottled water. Other Notice: Transportation to Alcatraz is provided by the National Parks Service via Alcatraz Cruises. You must be at the Pier 33 ferry terminal entrance no later than 8:00 am to be checked in for the staff boat that departs at 8:20 am. You can return on the 12:15 pm boat, or later if you choose. NPS policy requires that you show a photo ID in order to get on the boat. Be aware that prices for parking in this area can vary greatly, as little as $8-10 for all day, to as high as $6 an hour. As volunteering on Alcatraz can easily take 4 hours (or more) it can be worthwhile to shop around for parking. Food is NOT sold on the island, only water. If you choose to stay on Alcatraz after your project, we advise that you bring your own snack or lunch. Drinking fountains are located by both restrooms - at the dock and near the lighthouse. Eating, drinking, and smoking are only permitted on the dock. Beyond the dock only bottled water is allowed to be consumed. Please refrain from feeding the birds on Alcatraz - as tempting as it may be (the birds will beg and even try to snatch food out of your hands) human food is NOT good for them; dependence on human food can be the death of a bird. If you have a chance to stay after your project, we highly recommend the self-guided Alcatraz Cellhouse Audio Tour, available at the entrance to the cell house at no charge to you in thanks for your volunteer help. Please meet behind the RAW by 5:30AM and leave by 6AM to get rides arranged. Arrive at Pier 33 no later than 8AM. Don't Be late.
