Last year over 1500 young people gathered on 53rd Street and other locations around Hyde Park on Halloween and the preceding Saturday. The community and police were unprepared for the crowd, and there was a lack of constructive activities for teens to participate in. This year we are committed to creating a positive gathering space for youth on Halloween in our community. Hyde Park Teen Halloween 2017 is a collaborative effort of several community organizations and individuals, in partnership with neighborhood businesses, the park district, and police, with review and input from local teens. Safe and productive activities along 53rd Street and other selected locations will engage young people, support local businesses, and spread out the anticipated large crowd. Hyde Park Teen Halloween will take place on Saturday 10/28 and Tuesday 10/31 from 5:00-10:00. Planned activities include $5 horror movies at Harper Theater, a Spoken Word forum, a DJ and fashion show by youth designers, Nerf Wars, and Bubble Soccer. We also anticipate low price point samples at selected businesses, as well as charging stations for mobile phones, accessible restrooms, and shuttles to travel safely between locations. Volunteers are critical to this event's success! Volunteers will help supervise activities, act as liaisons at the doors of participating businesses, welcome young people and help channel their energy. Please sign up for one or more shifts on either or both days. If you cannot do a full shift, please indicate your available times in the comments.
