In these virtual sessions, volunteers will send text messages with the Know Your Rights wallet card to inform our communities about their constitutional and civil protections when interacting with law enforcement and immigration officials. Key aspects include the right to remain silent, not to consent to a search without a warrant, and the right to speak with a lawyer if arrested. Through this campaign we will equip over 500,000 Chicagoans across 77 neighborhoods with Know Your Rights resources. At Chicago Cares, we believe volunteering should connect volunteers through service and collaboration that leads to better community engagement. Our Know Your Rights Awareness Campaign is intentionally designed to help volunteers change their perspective and challenge bias. We believe that to move from transactional to transformational service we must center people and the opportunity to be more connected to one another – to build a stronger, more inclusive “we”. Our Know Your Rights Awareness Campaign aims to inform people about their constitutional and civil protections when interacting with law enforcement and immigration officials. These resources have been recommended by the City of Chicago and Governor JB Pritzker to help people prepare and defend their rights during encounters. What to Expect: This volunteer engagement will include a brief orientation to the ThruText platform. Texts will be sent from phone numbers through the platform, not from volunteers’ personal phone numbers. A computer or laptop is required to participate in this project. No experience necessary. Tasks could include creating a ThruText account, participating in the orientation, sending text messages to Chicagoans, replying to texts in a timely manner, reporting any harassment to staff/VLs.
