We have a non-profit group here in Denton TX called "Pals 4 Paws". We go to the Denton Animal Shelter and take the dogs for walks on-leash outside the Shelter. We are different than "Shelter Volunteers", in that we are trained to properly handle strange dogs, so the City of Denton allows us to do more than their regular Shelter volunteers. City volunteers are not allowed to leave the Shelter to exercise dogs. It took us about 6 months to convince the Shelter to allow us to leash walk the dogs outside in the park by the Animal Shelter, so we have just restarted this project. Any hours spent walking dogs, counts toward Community Service requirements for college students. I understand that UNT requires volunteer service for the Gold Cord. Additionally, many employers look at your volunteer service while as student to evaluate candidates for jobs after college. We are reaching out to you with the hope that members of your group might be interested in joining Pals 4 Paws and helping to exercise Shelter dogs. If interested, please let me know. I will be running a three part training session in November with the 1st class on November 2nd from 11am-1pm at the Denton Animal Shelter. You will learn lots of useful hands-on dog information, and feel completely comfortable walking any dog after you complete the training. Most of the training is hands-on working with Shelter dogs. There will be a total of three 2-hours sessions - for a total of 6 hours. The 2nd and 3rd sessions will be the following 2 Saturdays - November 9th and 16th - also at the Denton Shelter from 11am-1pm. Once you have completed the 6 hours of training, you will be able to go to the Shelter any time you want, and there is no minimum or maximum amount of time that you need to spend at the Denton Shelter - you go any day of the week - at any time you want. The Shelter will track your volunteer hours. All volunteers will receive a free t-shirt and dog leash at the training. Each day gives you 2 hours, so you will need (3) days of training.
