This, combined with the declaration of Indigenous People's Day from the University which went out yesterday, are monumental events towards increasing visibility and recognition of the Native community at UNT. They are also a testimony to literally years of hard work by the Native American Student Association (NASA) (https://www.untnasa.com/; https://www.facebook.com/untnasaorg/). Please attend this event if possible, and either way I hope as a collective department we can celebrate the students' two large accomplishments.
If you'll indulge me with a bit of department-relevant history that I've gotten to see firsthand as their adviser: the founding members of NASA in 2015 were both anthropology students (Alex Eller, Cherokee/Tsalagi, and Ashlee Solice, Chickasaw). When NASA was semi-dormant in early 2018 and needed to be revived, Emilia Gaston (who has taken several graduate classes in our department and is in fact doing an anthropology emphasis within her Sociology PhD) re-organized the group, doing tremendous work to get it going again. As well, several of the other founding members were anthropology students (past or present) who have worked tirelessly to get the organization off the ground. So this should also be a day of celebration for us on that level as well - that it is due to the work of many of our very own anth students, and a testimony to what can happen on campus with student involvement.
