One or more surveys have been conducted in 15 different Arab countries. About 75,000 adult men and women have been interviewed. Beginning with the second wave, conducted in 10 countries in 2010-2011, at the time of the Arab Spring, and culminating with the fifth and most recent wave, conducted in 12 countries in 2018-2019, the lecture will present selected findings about continuity and change in the views of Arab publics. Among the topics about which the lecture will present findings are attitudes toward governance and democracy, toward women’s status and gender equality, toward Islam and political Islam, and toward terrorism and terrorist movements. About the Speaker: Mark Tessler is Samuel J. Eldersveld Collegiate Professor of Political Science. He specializes in Comparative Politics and Middle East Studies. He has studied and/or conducted field research in Tunisia, Israel, Morocco, Egypt, and Palestine (West Bank and Gaza). He is one of the very few American scholars to have attended university and lived for extended periods in both the Arab world and Israel. He has also spent several years teaching and consulting in Sub-Saharan Africa.
