Marjorie Lee Browne loved mathematics. She is perhaps best known as a mathematics educator who worked tirelessly to strengthen secondary school teacher preparation. We can only speculate on her potential research contributions that were never realized due to discriminatory hiring practices at the time. As an educator, she worked to increase the participation of Blacks in mathematics by exposing students to its beauty and new opportunities. Seventy years after her PhD, the efforts to increase the participation in mathematics of African American, Latinx, and Native American students, who deserve this opportunity, continues — but the success is moderate. The speaker will describe his connection to Marjorie Lee Browne and his approaches to advancing mathematics, teacher preparation, and increasing the participation of marginalized populations in mathematics. He will highlight ways in which all attendees can become actively involved in such efforts.
