From Selma to Stonewall: Are We There Yet?

Date: Jan 28, 2020 at 6:30pm to 8:30pm
The University of Michigan Spectrum Center is excited to screen From Selma to Stonewall: Are We There Yet? The documentary follows a black, non-LGBTQ retired pastor and Civil Rights foot soldier who marched in Selma in 1965 and a white, lesbian author and Queer activist. They start out exploring the similarities, differences, and conflicts between the Black Civil Rights and LGBTQ Equality movements and find themselves in the midst of today’s struggles—hate crimes, police brutality, anti-LGBTQ religious hostility, and homeless Queer youth. The film provides an opportunity to delve into the history behind modern equal rights movements, exploring the crossroads between them and fostering invaluable discussions on identity and equality. From Selma to Stonewall: Are We There Yet? is an excellent resource for conveying the significance of these movements while also positioning them in today’s struggles, especially around issues of intersectionality. Snacks will be provided at the event.
