Books for a Benefit Literacy Day

Date: Nov 30, 2018 at 8:00am to 2:00pm
Books for a Benefit is looking for volunteers to help out with their Happy Potter themed Literacy Day!! The literacy day is at Bedford Elementary Schools in Dearborn Heights (4650 Croissant St, Dearborn Heights, MI 48125), and volunteers would be manning stations and working with kids from Preschool to 1st grade. Volunteers would be working at one of the four stations detailed below: Station 1 - Book Station: This is where students will choose a book of their own. They will also get a small bag, a pencil, an eraser, and a bookmark to go along with it. Station 2 - Make Your Own Spell Station: Here, students will draw and name their own spell, using colored paper, crayons, markers, glue, and scissors. Emphasis will be placed on prefixes and suffixes for older students in naming their spells. Station 3 - Sparkle and Reading Station: At this station, students will be given a word, and one by one as a group, they will spell out the word. This game is known as sparkle, but we will likely call it magic to stick with the Harry Potter theme. More challenging words related to the wizarding world will be given to older students. For young students, spelling is not much of an option, so instead we will read aloud a very basic book about magic to the students. Station 4 - Puzzle Station: Here, students will work together to make Harry Potter puzzles. The puzzles themselves will be pictures of the book covers. **IMPORTANT!: If no APO member can drive, Books for a Benefit will make sure you have a ride there, but will only be able to take 2-3 volunteers!!
