Leuk’s Landing Volunteer Guidelines: Thank you for coming to visit the kitties of Leuk’s Landing! We hope you have an enjoyable visit. Before you arrive, please review the following information and guidelines. You will need to sign a Volunteer Agreement and those terms are included in these Guidelines. If you visit again you do not need to sign the Agreement again. If you are bringing a child under 18, you must sign a consent form for your child to volunteer. Our sanctuary is home to about 30 cats who wander freely inside and outside in their facility. All of our cats have Feline Leukemia (see below for more information). FeLV is a contagious virus-based disease but with precautions, the risk of spreading to your cats at home is very low. It is not contagious to people or dogs. The disease is transmitted in wet saliva or mucus. Once it dries, the virus dies. • Before you leave, either wash your hands or use hand sanitizer. You should not be able to transmit to a home cat this way. What to wear & services at the sanctuary: In the summer, we do not have a/c but we have fans running. In the winter, we heat to about 60 degrees. Please dress appropriately. We recommend closed toed shoes. A host can open the outside area for you; do not open it yourself to prevent the kitties from escaping. Please be careful when walking outside in the grass as you may encounter cat feces. There are lint rollers above the sink for your use when you leave. We have a composting toilet on site. Instructions for use are on the container holding the toilet paper. There is an unsecured internet connection in the facility for your use. There is no password. We have bottled water in the refrigerator for our visitors. Even friendly cats can sometimes scratch. If you happen to get scratched, wash the area immediately and thoroughly with soap, or with the betadine liquid in the small bottle above the sink. If you need first aid supplies, they are in the upper cabinet left of the refrigerator. Some scratches require medical attention within a short time. When in doubt, seek medical attention. Some Do’s and Don’ts: Please do not pick up the kitties. Let them jump on your lap. They will! Please do not rub the bellies of kitties even if they offer it. Most kitties (70%) do not like belly rubs and may bite. A belly show is a sign of trust from a kitty rather than an invitation to pet him or her. You can take photos or videos! Since public relations is an important part of volunteering at Leuk’s Landing Inc., we may use photographs taken of you and/or your family (son, daughter, ward) for use in public relations efforts. Please do not pet caged cats. Cats are only caged when they cannot be medicated easily or following a procedure where they need to be quiet. If you move cat beds or cushions to sit on the couches/chairs, please return them to where you found them. If you play with cat toys dangling from sticks, move them slowly and the kitties will enjoy them more. They get bored with quick movements. If you want to bring treats for the kitties, they prefer Temptations (no seafood flavors). You can give them out to the kitties after letting the host know you want to do this. Give 3-4 treats to each kitty initially then circle back and give out more. This helps to keep everyone happy! Children under the age of 18 can volunteer, if a parent or guardian over the age of 21 is at the facility with the child the entire time that the child is present and supervising the child. Make sure you review the instructions with your children of any age about how to interact with the kitties. The kitties are excited when people visit and hissing or, rarely, aggressive behavior may occur. Do not attempt to break up any cats who are being aggressive. If necessary, you can spray them with water in the small water sprayer on one of the counters, labelled for this purpose. If you want to visit the kitties in the outside fenced area, ask the host to open the enclosure. Be careful when you enter and exit to make sure that no kitties escape. Please do not hold the door open for another member of your party, or to talk when going in and out. Directions: Leuk’s Landing will pop up in Google Maps if you use that GPS system. Otherwise, the address is 6305 Ford Road, Ypsilanti/Superior Twp 48198. When you get to the drive, go STRAIGHT back the long drive. Do not go up the hill drive to the left. Park at the green shed and come to the side door of the garage. The house is not Leuk’s Landing. Cancellations for the kitties: Please forgive us in the unlikely event that we need to cancel a visit to ensure the well-being of the kitties. Their health is our main concern, and we appreciate your understanding. If you have any questions before visiting, contact leukslanding@gmail.com. Thank you and enjoy your visit!
