Meeting Time & Location: DC @ 630A Maximum Number of Brothers: 15 Organization History: The Heroes Run was founded to raise funds for children’s health services at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Hospital & Clinics. As a public hospital, SCVMC has a unique mission – to provide care for all, regardless of ability to pay. Through a network of community-based clinics, SCVMC sees 125,000 visits from kids each year for primary and specialty care services. More than 3,500 babies are born at SCVMC annually, and because the hospital specializes in high-risk deliveries, nearly 10% of those babies receive care in the Level 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. SCVMC operates the only stand-alone Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in San Jose, and its Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center provides life-saving emergency care. The Heroes Run is the brainchild of Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jeremy Jones. After a particularly difficult call for service in which a child had to be rescued from an abusive family situation, Sgt. Jones stayed on duty with the child through the night at the SCVMC Pediatric Unit. He was inspired by the compassion and expertise in which SCVMC pediatric staff cared for their patients, especially those coming from traumatic situations. He vowed to do something to help. The next year, with the help of the Sheriff’s Sheriff Laurie Smith, the VMC Foundation and Sgt. Jones’ idealism and energy, the Heroes Run was born. From the very beginning, the event was destined to be more than just another 5k. Always set for the weekend after Halloween, kids and grown-ups alike come dressed as their favorite super hero. At the event, participants are greeted by a volunteer army of every day heroes; sheriff deputies, firefighters, doctors, nurses and first-responders, all working together so that any kid in Santa Clara County can get the healthcare they need. Since then, the Heroes Run has raised over $100,000 to support vital health services at SCVMC. Those funds have been used for things like new medical equipment and outfitting each pediatric hospital room with a new TV.
