Event Description:
The Language and Culture Exchange (LACE) Mixer is serving as our kickoff event to our LACE Program. Through this mixer, we would like to show international students what interacting with SJSU students is like and why/how they would benefit from such a program. Conversely, we would also like to show domestic SJSU students what they can stand to gain from meeting and building relationships with international students.
San José State University opened its intensive English language program in 1975 to meet the needs of incoming international students.
Since that day, thousands of students from more than sixty countries have improved their English skills for academic, professional, or personal reasons.
International Gateways staff and faculty focus on helping international students succeed in and out of class.
All faculty have MA or PhD degrees and are experienced in teaching academic English here and abroad. Our advisors can help you plan admission to a San José State University degree program or transfer to a local community college.
During this event you will be expected to:
-Socialize with international students
-Mingle/meet various international students
-Introduce one another
-Smile and be friendly
-Don't just talk to other SJSU students
-Be patient with international students' English abilities (talk slowly, be ok with repeating yourself)
Your efforts will go toward international students, most of whom are here learning English. Many have never lived abroad before. By actively participating in this service, you are playing an essential part in welcoming international students and making them feel at home here. In a larger context, you are representing the United States in dealing with visitors from other countries. This is why this is a service to Country.
While the nature of the service is social, please take this service (and your hospitality, positive attitude, and demeanor) seriously.
