Modern Language Association Convention Human Library Workshop

Date: Jan 11, 2020 at 8:30am to 10:30am
This weekend, the Modern Language Association of America convention will be held in downtown Seattle. The theme for the conference is Being Human and you are invited to participate in one of the conference panels called the “Human Library workshop.” The first Human Library was organized in 2000 in Copenhagen, Denmark by the group Stop the Violence. The purpose of this first event was to challenge prejudices, encourage dialogue about difficult subjects, and build relationships. The goals of every Human Library since have been similar. The events are held in safe spaces where people can have open and honest conversations to learn from each other. In a Human Library, volunteers who have overcome one of 13 "pillars of prejudice" as defined by HumanLibrary.org share their stories as "Human Books" through face-to-face dialogues. In sum, a Human Library is an interactive learning environment dedicated to challenging stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. The Human Library Workshop takes place at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, 11 January 2020, in Ravenna AB, Sheraton. If you would like to attend, the organizers of this workshop will be happy to waive the MLA convention registration fee, allowing access to additional conference panels on Saturday, January 11. The organizers would also be delighted to have volunteers who wish to participate as "Readers" or as "Books" in the workshop. If you would like to participate, they will provide information and training to prepare you for the event. To RSVP to attend or participate in the workshop, please send an email to: Anthony J.
