APO Endangered Species Coalition Event

Date: Jan 26, 2020 at 12:00pm to 3:30pm
The Endangered Species Coalition is a national organization that works to protect the most vulnerable species among us. One of ESC's biggest projects in Washington State is working to protect the endangered Southern Resident Orca. Only 73 orcas remain, and if we don’t act fast, we may lose them forever. The orcas are critical to our marine ecosystem and are one of the most iconic and cherished species in the Pacific Northwest, so we’re working hard to protect them. One of the ways we do this is by partnering with local student groups and volunteer organizations to do outreach and education! The ways these outreach events work is this: for half an hour, a representative of the ESC (Sarah) will give a presentation and lead a discussion about the orcas. Then there will be a half hour training on how to canvass (go door-to-door). Then volunteers will head to a nearby neighborhood (in APO's case, likely Ravenna / Wallingford, somewhere in walking distance of campus) to knock on doors in groups of 2 and talk to local residents about this issue, as well as collect petition signatures from them! Finally, we will return to the original meeting spot for pizza (or other food) provided by the Endangered Species Coalition. This is a great way to spread the word about the orcas and make a huge impact on this issue!
