This event will be held in-person and food will be served. If you prefer to attend virtually, please email arianna@american.edu so we can accomodate you. Participants will examine and discuss common criticisms of service-learning as a “pedagogy of whiteness” that relegates at-risk communities as “experimental labs” for student learning and promotes power imbalances between “server” and “served.” Participants will brainstorm concrete strategies of individual action they can take to decolonize service-learning and reframe their service towards a justice-based model rather than charity-based.
