Reparations for Slavery: History and Ongoing Debates

Date: Feb 6, 2020 at 11:00am to 12:30pm
The debates about reparations for the Atlantic slave trade and slavery are back in the news. Yet, enslaved and freed people have been calling for reparations since the eighteenth century. This lecture revisits the history of demands of reparations for slavery and discusses what this long and persevering history can teach us about the present-day context, when a growing number of social actors across started demanding governments, corporations, and universities to pay reparations for slavery. The Exploring Social Justice Series, a program cosponsored by the American University Library, the Center for Diversity & Inclusion, and the Kay Spiritual Life Center, brings to campus exemplary leaders from diverse backgrounds who have advocated for various human rights and social justice issues. Light refreshments will be served. All events are free and open to the public.
