KPU Presents: Jim Oberfell

The Kennedy Political Union (KPU) is honoring 50 years since the historic Stonewall Riots by inviting Mr. Jim Obergefell, plaintiff in the 2015 landmark Supreme Court case legalizing same-sex marriage, to speak at American University on Tuesday, August 27, 2019. Obergefell was the plaintiff in the landmark case, Obergefell v Hodges where he endured a grueling legal battle to win spousal marriage rights to be with his husband who was dying of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Though he eventually won the case for marriage equality, it was only after his husband had passed away. Obergefell seeks to inspire audiences with his moving story of love, loss and perseverance. Obergefell is a civil rights activist who will speak on marriage equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and ALS. Obergefell stated in a letter published by the White House after marriage equality was passed in 2015.
