SYSD-Freedom School @ DC General

Date: Apr 13, 2015 at 4:00pm to 7:30pm
The National Center for Children and Families operates a Freedom School after-school enrichment program and summer camp inside the DC General Family Shelter in Southeast DC. NCCF's mission is to assist the community in caring for its most vulnerable members--that's why we have taken our mission to DC General, a former hospital that’s situated between a jail and a morgue. The Freedom School is a glimmer of hope and happiness in an unexpected place. The program is designed to help children fall in love with reading, increase their self-esteem, and generate more positive attitudes towards learning. NCCF employs the CDF Freedom Schools curriculum that supports children and families around five essential components: high quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational leadership development; and nutrition, health and mental health. This project fulfills your SYSD requirement. Travel time is included. You will still be able to go to most of Take Back the Night if you go to this project. Don't let that deter you from signing up!
