Watermelon Smash

Date: Sep 27, 2014 at 12:00pm to 1:00pm
Join us for the first annual Watermelon Smash, brought to you by Lambda Chi Alpha at American University. 5 person teams will participate in several watermelon themed events, including wheelbarrow racing, decorating contest, a watermelon toss, a Watermelon eating contest, and of course, a smash. All proceeds will benefit PARC (People Against Rape Culture). "PARC is a 501(3)c licensed nonprofit based in Washington D.C. Founded in 2012 and incorporated in 2014, we use an education based approach to combat rape culture. Recognized as the practices, beliefs, laws, and discourses that trivialize, naturalize, and excuse rape, rape culture is the foundation upon which our astronomical rates of rape and sexual assault grow and thrive. Through developing and implementing age appropriate lesson plans and programs, producing and circulating commentary on current events relevant to rape culture and engaging our communities in productive dialogues around sexual assault, we work to chip away at the cultural foundations that underpin this epidemic of rape that is slowly coming to the fore of our nation's attention. We believe that a culture of respect and consent begins with education and awareness training, and that it is never too early or too late to get the tools you need to analyze the culture we live in and the ways in which rape and sexual assault are talked about, perceived, and dealt with, and how those practices relate to the unique nature of this pervasive form of violence.
