Plant and Aspen for Earth Day!

Date: Apr 20, 2024 at 9:00am to 4:00pm
Join us to plant an aspen forest at the Colorado State Forest Nursery to celebrate Earth Day in Fort Collins. WRV has teamed up with researchers at University of California, Berkeley to install over 1000 aspen trees as part of a study to understand drought tolerance among the species. Quaking Aspen (or Populus tremuloides), is one of the most widely distributed plant species in the Americas. Specimens were collected from central Mexico to Canada by UC Berkeley field researchers and have been treated to understand how drought affects different phenotypes within this highly variable species. Volunteers will plant baby aspen trees at their new permanent home on the property of the Colorado State Forest Service Nursery. These trees will be maintained by nursery staff while WRV and CSU researchers will team up for long-term monitoring of this population to collect additional information on drought, disease and pest tolerance in our climate. Join us for the staging day also (details TBA) and learn more about this unique project to kick off the restoration season with WRV.
