Making Community Media: Screenings with Asian American Filmmakers

Date: Mar 22, 2021 at 2:00pm to 3:15pm
At a time when digital media technologies are a bigger part of our lives than ever, it's all the more important for BMCC students to have opportunities to develop their ability to critique and create media. "Making Community Media" is a panel discussion and short film screening, organized by Adjunct Lecturer Alex Ho (Borough of Manhattan Community College) for the Asian American History course. Students will hear from Joshua Fu, the director the web series “Ching Chong Blues”, a satirical comedy about racial tokenism in media representation, and from Karen Kithan Yau, a labor rights lawyer and former community organizer, who regularly speaks on Chinese-American immigration history. By hearing from the two perspectives of Asian American artists and activists, students will be able to participate in a conversation about how our current digital media tools can be applied to advocate for community needs as well as allow for the cultural expression of marginalized communities. The event will also include a participatory workshop activity, where the audience will be led through pitching an idea for a short video piece. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/making-community-media-screenings-with-asian-american-filmmakers-tickets-141912906323?aff=ebdssbonlinesearch
