Jed Murdoch: Sustainable Cashmere Production in Mongolia

Date: Jan 24, 2020 at 12:00pm to 1:00pm
Cashmere is a multi-billion dollar global commodity that is sourced from a relatively small geographic area in northern Asia. Over 90% comes from Mongolia and China and the recent boom in cashmere production has led to substantial effects on the natural environment and livelihoods of people. The problem is exacerbated by the rapid rate of landscape development and climate change in northern Asia. This project aims develop an adaptive framework for making decisions about goat herding and cashmere production that leads to sustainable outcomes and will support the development of a cashmere certification program. Jed Murdoch is an Associate Professor in the Wildlife and Fisheries Biology Program in the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources. His research explores the effects of landscape change on the distribution and abundance of wildlife, especially species that face conflicts with people. Jed serves as a member of the IUCN/SSC Canid Specialist Group and trustee of The Nature Conservancy in Vermont.
