Dawson's book, Undercurrents of Power: Aquatic Culture in the African Diaspora, winner of the Lapidus Center's 2019 Harriet Tubman Prize, explores the aquatic prowess and culture of West Africans, who took these skills with them into New World slavery, and used them to shape their lives in ways that are often overlooked.
