Orange Shirt Day

Date: Sep 30, 2023 at 12:00am to 11:59pm
September 30th, also called Orange Shirt Day, is a national day dedicated to recognizing the legacy of the Native American Residential School System. Join ISA and the MRC in observing this day on Friday, September 29th by wearing orange! The impacts are so much deeper than the simple definition of what residential schools were, which is government-sponsored religious schools established to assimilate Indigenous children into Western culture. All throughout the U.S. and Canada, these children were forcibly taken and subjected to multiple forms of abuse and outcomes such as death. This systems intention was to commit cultural genocide which is explained by the quote Kill the Indian, Save the Boy. It is important to understand that indigenous people are still affected today by what these schools inflicted upon entire communities. The last residential school was closed in 1996 therefore, this is not something of the distant past. Let's come together to show support for indigenous people and shed light on these atrocities that tend to be silenced. Join us on wearing orange September 30th!
