I have been a volunteer “greeter” with the Honor Flights for the past few years. We greet and welcome the WWII veterans when they land at Dulles airport. They spend the day in Washington, DC and especially enjoy visiting the WWII memorial. This is our way of thanking them for their service to our country. It can be a very moving and emotional day for the veterans and our presence when they arrive helps them realize how important their service is to all of us today. The more greeters, the more moving it is for them especially since they don’t expect such a hero’s welcome. Almost every branch of the military is also present to help greet the veterans. This has always been a worthwhile volunteer job for me and I would encourage anyone who has never assisted with the honor flights to try it. A lot of work goes into organizing the trip (at no cost to the veterans) and volunteers receive validation on their parking ticket to encourage people of all ages to come out for the flights (no fee for parking).
