Words Alive: Where the Wild Books Are

Date: Sep 27, 2023 at 10:30am to 1:30pm
Hello brothers! I’m so excited to start working with a new philanthropic organization this semester: Words Alive! Words Alive was founded in 1999 by a social worker who wanted to start a book club for kids in at-risk populations. Today, Words Alive proudly serves 4,000 students and families monthly. The organization holds the belief that if you value reading and understand its fundamental connection to all aspects of your life, then you will be better equipped to thrive as a lifelong learner and productive member of your community. Every Wednesday, we have the opportunity to volunteer at their “Where the Wild Books Are” program at their office! This work varies each week - volunteers often pack backpacks, organize curriculum, count out classroom sets of books, sort materials, or whatever the most pressing need is that day. Once you sign up on their website, you’ll receive an email 24 hours before the start of your volunteer shift explaining what task you’ll be doing that day. The Words Alive office is located downtown so PLEASE make sure you’re allowing yourself enough time to find parking or take the trolley. Words Alive understands that its volunteers lead busy lives so they greatly appreciate help even if you cannot stay for the entire time. If you do leave your volunteer shift early, please let me know so that I can give the correct amount of credit. As per our accountability clause, if you are caught lying about how long you worked, I will have to take away hours and have a conversation with you which I really don’t want to do so please be honest and communicative about if you need to leave early! If you’d like to chair this event, please comment “chair” below and be sure to submit a picture of participants to philanthropy@aposdsu.org within 48 hours of the event!
