Urban Surf 4 Kid's mission is to empower youth who have experienced complex trauma to become independent adults, leaders in the community, and champions for the environment. With the help of donors, supporters, community and business partners, a legion of volunteers and even their own alumni leaders, they are catching waves and changing lives. On September 10th, Urban Surf 4 Kids will hold their 26th Annual Surfing Clinic for the blind and visually impaired and we're invited to join in on the fun! They are looking for in-water helpers to ensure the surf camp is safe for all of our blind and visually impaired participants. They need 5 in-water volunteers per team, with 1 lead, 2 in the waist / chest deep end, and 2 on shore to catch our participants and their surfboards. In-water volunteers do not need to have surf experience if they are only planning to be on shore to catch participants. However, we do ask that they are comfortable in the ocean. Sometimes shore volunteers will need to go in the shallow section of the water to help the participants stand up and turn their surfboard around. Teams of 5 will be put together by US4K the day of the event based on ocean / surf experience and strength. They also need help with selecting wetsuits / rash guards for our participants. For this role, they ask that volunteers have a basic knowledge of wetsuits. Most participants are brand new to the ocean and will likely need assistance / reassurance that the wetsuit is fitting properly. IMPORTANT NOTE: For in water volunteers, there is a volunteer orientation on September 7th at 6pm on Zoom.
