Brother of the Week - Maureen O'Brien!
Maureen AKA Mo has been with our chapter since it's chartering days!  This week, Mo is being featured for helping Mu Pi keep in touch with Canine Partners of the Rockies, as well as for helping organize the Murder Mystery fellowship with Chris Graff!

Here's what Mo has to say:

A big thank you to everyone who voted for me! I love being able to plan fun things for APO, such as the Murder Mystery (and a shout out to Chris Graff for all of his help with that too!), because I love watching everyone have fun :) Also, Joyce and I are both equally thankful for the pairing between CaPR and APO and we hope that it keeps going long after I am gone! It's been a wonderful 3.5 years being a part of APO and I am looking forward to having an awesome last semester with everyone! I hope everyone has a fantastic summer and thank you again!

Brother of the Week - Lucas Niven
This is Lucas' THIRD time getting Brother of the Week!  This week, Lucas was nominated for his dedication to helping out the DU Interest Group of APO!  Thank you for everything you do for APO, Lucas :)

Here's what Lucas has to say:

"Thanks brothers for voting me BotW for the third time! I enjoy helping out however I can around the group and going to all our awesome events. Working with the DU interest group has been a blast so far. They are all really cool people whom I can already tell love APO as much as we do. I can't wait to bring them all up to one of our chapter meetings so you can meet them all. I enjoy giving back to the community, the campus, the fraternity, and the nation which is why I try to help whenever I can. It's probably a little bad for me though, I need to remember there is also school homework I need to finish as well Haha."

Brother of the Week - Ian Wright!
Congratulations Ian Wright (or rather, thank you!).  Ian was nominated for doing a lot of the grunt work in our latest fundraiser - the Valentine's Day Flower Sale!  We've made about $135 profit this far into the fundraiser, and hope to double that number today!  Thank you for everything you've done to make this fundraiser a success, Ian!

Here's what Ian has to say:

"What would I like to say to APO? Well, being on fundraising is a really neat position because you get to raise money so that the chapter can have really fun fellowship events and participate in really cool service events. The thing I like most about being in APO is retreat because it's a chance to hang out with my Mu Pi brothers with out the formality of a chapter meeting, and spending the weekend with a group of people you really get to know a lot about them."

"Brother" of the Week - Adam Cauble
Congratulations to our second "Brother" (aka Pledge) of the week!  In fact, Adam was nominated for brother of the week BEFORE he became a pledge!  Adam is a recruiting machine for our chapter already - we can't wait to get to know him, and all his friends!

Here's what Adam has to say:

"Well, I just joined APO, but I'm happy to be in! I'm excited for events and such. You can facebook stalk me if you'd like :)"

More about the pledges after their first meeting this Sunday :)

Brother of the Week - Amanda Spencer
This last week, Amanda Spencer was voted our Brother of the Week for a number of things!  She's been working very actively with Compassion by the Book on our campus, she (and her roommates!) helped teach the chapter a dance, and she served on the Regionals Committee! Way to go, Amanda!  Here's what Amanda has to say:

Hey Brothers!

Thanks for voting me Brother of the Week, I am very excited! :) To tell you all a little bit about myself, let's start with how much I heart APO! I rushed APO in the spring of 2011, so I have officially been an active for a year! I was the VP of Service for my pledge class, and through that I started working with Compassion by the Book, which most of you probably know about by now (if not, I'd love to get you involved!) I've been fortunate enough to get to continue the textbook drives beyond our pledge class service event, and with some help from Michelle, was asked to serve on their student Board of Directors! It's now my goal to work with other clubs on campus to make Compassion by the Book it's own student organization, growing from just our APO chapter to the entire campus! I decided to join APO because my roommates met some of our actives at the Celebration of Mines, and we thought that it would be a good idea to get involved at school, and they lured us in! Now APO is an amazing group of friends, and I love going to meetings and events, and I am looking forward to getting more involved in the future, and possibly becoming an officer! My favorite memories of APO (among many) are playing with the puppies at AIKD, our rootbeer kegger, and flash mobbing with the Regionals Commitee at the Region 8 Conference, where I got to meet some really awesome brothers from Section 30!

I also love APO because it gives me something to do besides school (which I know is all our favorite thing to do, right?)! I have my hands full with a Biochemistry major, a BELS minor, and a possible Biomaterials minor. I'm in the Pre-Med program, and I someday hope to be an orthopaedic surgeon. As of right now, I'm well on my way, if I can just get that pesky MCAT out of the way! In the meantime, I just pretend like I am a doctor, and like to learn about all sorts of injuries and how to treat them!

Well, that's pretty much all about me! Here's some fun trivia for the road: I live with 7 people, I was a dancer for 16 years, my favorite color is pink, my absolute favorite movie ever is Pirates of the Caribbean, and I despise green vegetables!

Regionals 2012!!
Welcome back brothers!  I hope you're all super pumped about the upcoming Spring 2012 semester!  I wanted to take a couple minutes to share with you all some tidbits about Regionals, which happened this last weekend (Jan 13 - 15) in the very-local Ft. Collins, Colorado!

A little history: this is the first time the Region 8 Conference has been hosted in Section 30 in sixteen YEARS!  The Epsilon Xi chapter lead Section 30 to a huge conference success.  We had several actives from the Mu Pi chapter serving on the conference committee - be sure to thank them for their hard work!  This conference couldn't have happened without them.  Also: huge kudos to the volunteers from Epsilon Xi chapter that ran the buses between the hotels, Old Town, and the Student Center.  You guys truly rock!

Many of our brothers got the chance to take APO LEADS courses at the conference: Launch, Explore, Achieve, and Discover were all offered!  Some very special APO Staff helped bring these courses to Section 30 - Glen Kinder, Joey Kovar, Matt Rom, Jeremy Bingman, Jessie Bykowski, and Frank Heismeyer!  If you get the chance, be sure to send them a thank you.  Also, be sure to log any LEADS courses you've completed right here on APOonline!  It'll help you keep track of what you've completed and when, so if you don't get your completion stickers/certificate from Nationals, you can follow up :)

If you weren't taking APO LEADS courses, there were plenty of other workshops to keep you busy: workshops on effective presentations, membership & retention, how to put APO on your resume, fundraising, networking, and ample round-table opportunities!  There was no shortage of classes to keep everyone happily occupied.

But it wasn't all hard work!  There was free ice skating down in Old Town, lots of local tasty food, and a sweet dance after the awards banquet!

SPEAKING of the awards banquet, we have a LOT to be bragging about this year, Mu Pi!  In the 2010-2011 school year, our chapter earned the Diamond Level Chapter of Excellence Award for the second consecutive year, and earned the Blue Level Pledge Program of Excellence Award, making it our first of many PPoE's!  We also won the award for bringing the most school supplies to donate to the conference, thanks very much to our alumni :) If you want to learn more about the CoE, PPoE, and other chapter awards, check out the national website [here].

Brothers, we have a chapter (and a section!) to be very, very proud of.  I hope you are all holding your heads high with pride!

And if alllll that isn't enough, Mu Pi had a totally awesome roll call video this year.  Check it:

Semester's End
Brothers - It's been a FANTASTIC semester!  Over the last week we've had goodbyes: to some old officers, and our three graduating seniors!

Sean Fitzsimons, Andrea McCarty-Daniels, and Rachel Phillips were all founding brothers of this chapter (the recharter of it, anyway!).  This chapter obviously wouldn't be the same without them - a million thank-yous to them for their ~3.5 years of service to Alpha Phi Omega!

At the Holiday Party that the lovely duo Robyn and Holly threw us on Dead Day, we also honored some very special brothers:

Bryan Schwarz, for being an amazing President over the last semester.  Also for having the most service hours logged this semester - a whopping 116.75 hours!  We will miss you, Bryan!

Brothers Cassie Stember & Matt Taulton tied for most fellowship events - nine!

FINALLY, our new Spring 2012 officers were sworn in by our brand spankin' new community advisor: Kathryn Whitfield!  A huge thanks to all of our advisors that made it!

In addition to honoring these stellar brothers on Dead Day, we kept some traditions alive - chowing down on tons of food made with Mu Pi love, and some friendly family competition in the form of a "gingerbread" house competition!  Some true Engineering expertise was exercised... I mean, where else are you gonna find gingerbread houses that look this good!?

Thanks for a great semester brothers!  Good luck with what's left of final exams, and have a safe holiday break!

PS: Register for Regionals! Early Bird (super discounted) Registration ENDS this week!

Congratulations Spring 2012 Officers!
Tonight we held our elections for the upcoming semester!  While some of our current officers will remain through the school year, the following new officers were elected for Spring 2012:
  • President: Holly Schmitz
  • VP Service Campus and Fraternity: Mary Snooks
  • VP Fellowship: Robyn Chaconas
  • Secretary: Lexi Salazar
  • Sergeant-at-Arms: Cameron Emerson

PAR and Historian offices were also up for election, and the current holding officers (Cassie Stember and myself, respectively) were elected to maintain these offices for the next semester.

CONGRATULATIONS to all of you, and a huge thanks to everyone that ran for an office.  It's so much fun to hear everyone share their thoughts for growth and the future of our chapter :) we'll be in GREAT hands!

Brother of the Week - Andrea McCarty-Daniels
Congratulations to this week's Brother of the Week - Andrea!  Andrea was nominated for her huge heart demonstrated over the last week to your silly, sobbing Historian.  But I'm going to brag about this brother a little more - she's been with our chapter since before we were a chapter, and has dedicated countless hours towards the success of this chapter.  Thank you for everything you've done over the years, Andrea!

Here's what Andrea has to say, "Thanks for the nomination! I don't really have anything to say to everyone, just that I'm really excited to get out of Mines (yay!)."

Brother of the Week - Matt Taulton
This last week we nominated Matt Taulton as our Brother of the Week!  Matt has done a ton of great things for our chapter - he is ROCKING the service record, and organized a very successful bake sale fundraiser in this last month.  Thanks, Matt!

Here's what Matt has to say:

"My Name is Matt Taulton, however most people just call me Taulton, I am a Senior in Petroleum Engineering looking forward to my graduation in May. I joined APO in the spring of last year for the potential service opportunities and am very glad that I did. I have had the opportunity to make many new friends who share a lot of the same values. APO has provided me with many opportunities to help the community I live in and more opportunities to aid the growth of the fraternity. My favorite APO event so far has to be the breakfast hike we had a few weeks ago."

Brother of the Week - Ariel Bridgeman
Congratulations to our new brother of the week - Ariel!  Ariel has been working hard this semester to keep our chapter connected with some local Girl Scouts.  Thank you, Ariel!!

Here's what Ariel has to say:

"I’m a junior studying Engineer Physics, and I don't really sleep ever.  I joined APO the fall of my freshman year.  Cindy, who was our president for two years, was my CSM 101 mentor.  It was through her encouragement and a love for service that got me to join APO.   My favorite memory has to be the AIKD Celebration.  Last year, Michelle and I (and almost every brother!) helped organize this huge service event for Youth Service Week.  At the end, it was great to see that all our planning really pulled off!"

Some Mid-Semester Business
Hey guys!  I've been a web slacker these last couple weeks.  Please forgive me!

Some important stuff was shared at meeting tonight!  Here's some linked info for your web-addicted convenience:
  • Kelly Mason came and visited our meeting to share some details about Regionals 2012!  As you heard, Regionals will be hosted in Colorado (Section 30 REPRESENT!) for the first time in sixteen years!  Holy cow!  Make sure you're familiar with the details about Regionals (or know how to contact someone who does) so you can help our fellow Region 8 brothers out when the time comes. Registration is $35 - what a killer deal!  Our Section Chair Bryan Bennett has promised us something embarrassing if 90% of our chapter attends.  Dudes.  We can do this!  Also, this paragraph clearly does not have enough exclamation marks.  Allow me to add some: !!!!!
  • TOMORROW is the LAST day to vote for Alpha Phi Omega at the beloved Burns & McDonnell website, here: http://www.burnsmcd.com/You-Decide-We-Provide share the link with your friends, tell your family, and vote more than once!  Be sure you fully type out "Alpha Phi Omega" in your vote, not just "APO".  Winning this competition sends a $1,000 check in our direction.  We've won it for the last two years - let's not lose it now!
  • Our section chair Bryan Bennett came and reviewed the Risk Management policy with us!  It's a little dry (and hopefully a lot of common sense), but if you have any questions, contact your President Bryan Schwarz, or check out the policy here.
Some stuff about the last two weeks:

Retreat was INCREDIBLE! A HUGE thank you to our lovely VP Fellowship Holly for organizing a weekend for us at Cal-Wood Education Center!  It was a weekend filled with tons of team building exercises... and tons of wood.  I might mean that literally, but I don't know the density of the wood we were hucking.  Three cords is a LOT of wood though, that's for sure!

Here's a couple snippits... be sure to hit up our facebook group for the rest!

"Brother" of the Week - Lucas Niven
Congratulations to our "Brother" of the week - Lucas Niven!  Lucas is more appropriately *pledge* of the week, since he has yet to be inducted... psh, details!  Lucas has been an exemplary pledge in his short time with Mu Pi chapter: attending Sectionals, being a team motivator, and doing TONS of service! Thanks Lucas!

Here's what Lucas has to say:

"My name is Lucas Niven. I joined APO this semester because i like meeting new people and enjoy helping others out. Last year i was in a wheelchair and was unable to get out and enjoy all the fun things i use to enjoy, so this semester i decided i was going to do as many fun things that i could handle and APO was one of those. So far this year it has been a blast going to sectionals, retreat, and MBU, and i can't wait for all the other things coming up. It's going to be awesome! I'm currently a junior in Engineering Physics and i love it! Physics is by far the coolest major where you do all the coolest things. In the words of Sheldon Cooper, I'm a physicist. I have a working knowledge of the entire universe and everything it contains."

Brother of the Week - Robyn Chaconas
Second Roby(i)n in a row!  Robyn earned this honor at the Breakfast Hike fellowship before Fall Break.  So we all hiked up South Table, right?  After we had all reached the top... we realized we had no source of fire to light the oven.  Rather than bust out our (no-existent) Boy Scout skills, Robyn volunteered (without skipping a beat!) to run back down South Table, and up again, to get us a lighter.  Thirty minutes later, we were all enjoying scrambled eggs, sausage, and pancakes.  Thanks Robyn!

Here's what RobYn has to say:

"I’m a junior studying mechanical engineering. I joined APO the fall of my freshman year, and have enjoyed it more and more every year. My favorite things about APO are all of the amazing people I’ve gotten to know, and the awesome service and fellowship events we do, so basically everything about it. Retreat this past weekend was also the best ever!! I can’t wait to get even more involved and keep doing super-duper awesome events!"

Brother of the Week - Robin Emerson
Congratulations to Robin Emerson for being selected as this week's Brother of the Week!  This is our chapter's way of saying THANK YOU for putting together an epic family competition for us earlier this afternoon (dominated by Dr. IMP, by the way! Send pictures my way to have them posted).

Here's what Robin has to say:

"I am currently a junior in Engineering (Environmental Specialty). I was a member of Mu Pi's Spring 2011 Pledge Class, and I'm so glad I decided to join. I've had such amazing opportunities through APO and have met a ton of new friends. It's great to be a part of an organization that promotes taking on leadership roles in a variety of ways (with the full support of the chapter behind you, so you don't ever feel like you're on your own!) Being in APO has really enriched my experience at Mines and has helped me stay focused and on track, in school and out. Thanks Brothers!!"

Brother of the Week - Ben Prewitt (AKA "Prewitt")

Congratulations Ben Prewitt for being selected as our chapter's first Brother of the Week!  Ben was a member of the Fall 2010 pledge class, is a member of the SNAFU Blue Family, and is currently in his sophomore year pursuing Biochemical Engineering.  The man is freakishly good at anything Chemistry related.  He also, apparently, likes to write about himself in the third person.  BEHOLD:

~Prewitt: The Man Behind the Beard~

To most, he is just a scruffy, ill-groomed guy walking about the Mines campus probably chopping down trees in his spare time. But in APO, he's a scruffy, ill-groomed guy with a mission of service to his fellow man. (On a side note, he surprisingly enough has never cut down a tree. - Should probably get on that.) His favorite service events are MBU and tutoring at Lakewood High School. "I just like helping other students figure things out," he says.
